Evading Pursuit

With less than a week till Easter, I’m glad to publish the first piece of flash fiction to my patrons. While it’s a little later than I would have liked, I did better this month than I have since January, which is a good thing. Eventually, I’ll fall into the cadence I’d like to maintain. But for the time being, I’m excited to publish the Action/Adventure that my patrons wanted.

When I sat down in front of my laptop, the story’s core popped into my mind, and I knew which characters I’d be reaching for. Despite creating the Drifters to explore a group of smugglers, I didn’t want to let the momentum of penning a story for my original space cowboys go to waste. As a result, I bended the Action/Adventure genre with Science Fiction and started piecing the disparate tidbits together to create a complete tale.

So find a comfortable chair and dive into the latest escapade of the Scythe’s crew.

As the Scythe sails the stars, searching for their next job, they are ambushed by a pair of recon fighters and a battle quickly ensues…

Evading Pursuit

“Have you shaken the gnats off us yet?”

“They’re persistent little pests,” Laurie said, glaring over her shoulder as she jerked the Scythe’s controls, sending the craft into a tight barrel roll. When the ship completed its maneuver, it had whirled about, settling into a headlong course for the fighters. With a groan, she flicked a switch on the comm system. “Harlan, the captain, has a job for you.”

“Is that so?”

“Of course,” Laurie said as the color faded from her knuckles. “He’d like you to dispense with one of those interlopers, though he would prefer it if you took care of both.”

A bolt of energy dashed from under the Scythe, striking the closest fighter. As the small craft’s shielding rippled, more bolts crashed into it, straining the protection with each collision. When the Scythe reached the fighters, a series of explosions consumed the weakened craft in an intense fireball.

“Looks like they’ve upgraded their shields,” Harlan said. “That’s annoying.”
