Art Roundup, week of July 20th

There are a handful of landscapes that epitomize nature’s beauty. Among that short list are coastlines. There’s a certain charm when they don’t put on a show. No crashing cliffs, no sweeping harbors, just the quiet intersection of land and water. The waves create a rhythmic motion, akin to breathing. Yet even when there’s nothing dramatic, the simple views of the world can surprise you. Be it a rise in the horizon or an unexpected shape carved by wind and time, something captivates you, drawing your eye to beauty you might have otherwise missed. These deviations, subtle yet undeniable, are what make every outing along the water feel like you’re uncovering hidden secrets.

What lingers in those fleeting moments is balance. The following images, with their muted tones and unhurried waters, give way to moments of quiet punctuation. Sights such as a simple rock face lit by the right light, or the faint suggestion of human presence, are nothing on their own. However, taken together, they carry a weight, as though the landscape has been in conversation for centuries, and we’ve only now begun to overhear it. Look past the quiet palette and you’ll find a soft spectrum of color—not loud, but settled and grounding.

These views feel as if they’ve been gently exhaled into the world. They don’t demand your attention or cry out for study. Instead, they whisper, inviting you to slow down, breathe deep, and linger just a little longer. If you see any images here that aren’t available on Natural Desygns or SM Desygns reach out to me through the Etsy store and I’ll add the image to the correct store. In the meantime, click any of the images to head over to DeviantArt to get a better look.

Silent Sentinel

Sometimes, the shoreline never varies. That’s not to say that seeing a shoreline glide past you is boring. Quite the contrary, in fact. However, as the sailboat explored the coast, a swath of the landscape altered, jutting up into the sky, creating a little bluff. Now there might be those who will look at the composition and object to that description, based solely upon the height of the jutting land. While the bluff is scarcely larger that the trees topping it, that’s still a drop I wouldn’t want to experiment with.

With that potential quibble out of the way, let’s dive into the view. The exposed golden rock creates a compelling contrast to the hazy grays of the sky and deep blues of the ocean. However, despite the previously untouched land, you will see a white structure perched atop the bluff, nestled in the trees, like a sentinel standing watch over the waters. The texture, contrast, and rhythm of the composition rooted in time’s endless march.

I need to take more trips on boats. There’s something special about gliding across the water as you rise and fall with the tides. While my view captured most of my focus, the conversation with the boat’s captain pulled me away from the sights from time to time. However, in the lulls in the conversations, the homes and pretty much any thumbprint of human interaction with this section of the shore gave way to the trees. They gradually became the focal point of this composition, blanketing the background in autumnal gradients that provide splashes of yellows, oranges, and golds.

Despite the shifting hues of the thick foliage, a few trunks are visible amidst the left portion of the picture. That handful of delicate trunks gives the scene a sense of muted wilderness. The water, ruffled but not stormy, hums beneath it all like a song just under the breath. There’s a hush inside this snapshot, as though nature herself was holding her breath. With enough reflection, that stillness gives way to a more subtle type of beauty, one that lingers instead of dazzling.
