Scrutiny Applied

Last month, I started building a storyline for Elara that I wasn’t able to start. I wanted to explore the summons, but outside obligations pulled my attention away and forced me to set it aside. When I returned to it, I revisited the outline I’d created and worked through the events again. Once I had the initial pass, I focused on refining the story into its final form.

Elara’s guild does not summon its members without cause. When a call is issued, expectations are set. Those who answer understand their work will be placed under scrutiny, their decisions weighed, and their judgment measured against the outcomes. There are no casual appearances within those walls.

Elara has always approached her craft with intent. Every piece she assembles follows the rules she establishes. For her, precision isn’t optional. It’s required. Yet even the most controlled designs can draw attention when their limits press against the bounds of guild rules. Once the guild’s attention settles on such work, it does not move on without cause.

Under that scrutiny, observation becomes pressure. Conversations become meaningless. Nothing is ignored. It is not enough for something to function. It must be understood, justified, and kept within its bounds.

Elara rubbed an arm as she stood beside her automaton. She glanced behind her at the trio sitting with the guild members who had come to witness her judgment. Her lips tightened when she caught Garron’s haughty smile. As her fingernails dug into her palms, she returned her attention to the seat looming over her and the automaton. It served as both her offense and her defense. She drew several deep breaths as she closed her eyes and waited.

Despite the din, the opening door thundered through the room. Elara glanced about, catching sight of Garrick’s head. Before too long, he walked over to the machine and reinserted the automaton’s logic lattice. The chamber watched in silence as the plates locked into place, each click carrying the weight of the guild’s scrutiny. Once he finished installing them, Garrick closed the machine’s panel and returned to his seat.

He raised a hand while clearing his throat, and the side conversations died. He held the stillness as he tapped the wrench on the table before him. “What happened to the original plates?”

“I handed them over to the guild when they secured my creation.”

“When did you create the set sitting inside your machine?”

Elara’s eyes opened as she inched forward. “I created the lattice my automaton is using after receiving this summons.”

Garrick’s lips curled into a slight smile as he picked up the wrench and tapped it against the table, creating a tense heartbeat. “Was the reversion to an acceptable set of rules for your machine done in an attempt to comply or as a correction to an oversight in your original definitions?”

“The initial constraints were not as tight as they should have been.”

Garrick leaned forward as he slammed the wrench onto the table. “Was it to remedy the failure, or to placate the guild as scrutiny closed in?”

Elara drew a measured breath as her nails pressed deeper into her palms. “I sought to remedy my automaton’s deficiency. I should have resolved the issue sooner.”

A murmur rippled through the gathered guild members.

“Thank you for your honesty.” Garrick leaned back into his chair as he released the tool, letting it rest against the wooden tabletop. His gaze drifted from her to her creation. “Given that you have already addressed your failings, the fine will be reduced—”

“What about her automaton?!”

Elara’s face tightened as she whirled around, finding Tessik on his feet stepping forward.

He raised a hand as he focused on the automaton. “That thing threatened our lives twice! It must be destroyed.”

“Enough!” Garrick reclaimed the wrench and set it down with a sharp crack. “Garron, you and your friends were permitted to attend this hearing as a courtesy.”

The leader of the trio popped to his feet and dragged his friend back. “We’re sorry for the interruption.”

Tessik pulled himself free from his friend. “They have to destroy the thing—”

“You’ve been given access,” Garrick said, rising from his seat and setting the wrench down with deliberate force. “Don’t confuse generosity with authority. You are guests of this organization. You shouldn’t mistake an opportunity to observe with the right to voice actions for the guild!”
