When a trusted friend gave me a copy of Wizard’s First Rule, I wasn’t expecting much from the book. Truth be told, I didn’t expect I’d ever complete the novel. At the time, I was more obsessed with TV shows than books. Yet because of who recommended the book, I put forth an effort. Long story short, by the time I reached the book’s climax, nothing was going to get between me and the end of the story.
Each new installment of The Sword of Truth series had the same effect on me. While I’ve had that same sensation as other novels, there have, of course, been some that I finished only because I dislike leaving things unfinished. For those, reaching the last words always felt like a chore. However, let’s circle back to Wizard’s First Rule. More than just a thrilling climax, the first installment in the Sword of Truth sparked a love for reading that still burns today.
The reason for the preamble is I’m an author and besides getting the story out of my mind, I desperately want to impact people’s live, no matter how the scale. As such, I enjoy speaking with people who’ve read my writing. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to speak with everyone, but I’ve been able to speak with a few. And from that handful, I’d like to highlight the conversations I’ve had with one.
After this reader finished reading Dead Man’s Hand, the reader informed me upon reaching the book’s climax, the reader would not put the book down until the novel was complete. Instantly, those words filled me with joy as they connected to my experience with Wizard’s First Rule. My writing compelled this reader to complete the book without stopping upon reaching the climax.
Hearing that was enough to put me on cloud nine. But then, the reader said something even more meaningful. Just as Wizard’s First Rule reignited my passion for books, Dead Man’s Hand deepened the readers. Even though I loved hearing the first comment, the second one was even more special, because it mirrored my own journey back into the world of books. It was nice to know that a story I crafted moved someone to delve back into the world of books.
Thinking about those words still makes me smile. Someone else took a journey like mine, because of a story I wrote. Deep down, I can’t think of anything more impactful as an author. So once more I want to thank that reader for the reaction. It made my day and will continue to put a smile on my face whenever I stop to remember your kind words.
