Hunting Outlaws

First, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Easter. May you all have a wonderful day filled with family, friends, and joy. When I finished penning both Evading Pursuit and Hidden Theft, I turned my attention to the final story for the month, a historical fiction. Aside from knowing who would feature in this tale, everything else was eluding me. Which meant I sat down and stared at my laptop’s screen as I sifted through various potential ideas, instantly dismissing the vast majority of them. However, after much internal debate, I found the right seed for Samuel’s latest adventure.

A little backstory to this snippet of Samuel’s story. He and Anna, having secured two of three fugitives, chase the final member of the elusive gang. When they finally get close to the wounded Clayton, he ducks into an abandoned building. So with that knowledge, find a seat and hunker down as we witness Samuel and Perl’s latest adventure.

Having chased a wounded Clayton for days, Samuel and Anna find him entering an abandoned building…

“Pearl,” Samuel said, stepping toward the ramshackle building, “you and Brutus take flight and circle the area while we deal with our business inside.”

Anna grabbed Samuel’s arm, pulling it away from the rickety wooden door. “Why are you dismissing our dragons?”

Samuel freed himself from her grasp as he gripped the doorknob and peered down at Anna with a lopsided grin plastered across his face. “Do you think it wise to allow Clayton the opportunity to double back and free his companions?”

“Oh,” Anna said, twisting her neck to watch Pearl and Brutus reach the apex of their climb. As they banked to start their journey around the valley, she turned back, shaking her head. “I suppose you have a point.”

When the door swung into the building, Samuel thrust his lantern into the doorway as he cocked his LeMatt. As he inched inside the ramshackle structure, Samuel’s mouth curled into a warm smile. “Given that we’ve already secured his companions, our sole concern is Clayton.”

“Are you sure he hasn’t met up with anyone else?” Anna asked as she inched closer to the opening.
