When I sat down to figure out what to write about with 2025’s second piece of micro fiction, I knew I wanted to feature The Academy. The goal behind this series was to give me a deeper exploration of the school than Journeys allowed. That’s more about Darren Gilbert. Besides giving me the chance to explore more of the school, it gives me the opportunity to highlight a different period. So, I would the clock back a little and created a story featuring a dueling pair of students. I didn’t expect these characters to grow on me, but they have, though not as much as Darren Gilbert or Tiatha Orbryn.
However, when I sat down to craft the second piece of micro fiction for the month, it made perfect sense to flock back to Leodar’s school. When I thumbed through my past stories of The Academy, I remembered where I came from, and it was easy to develop the skeleton of this micro tale. The crux of the story focuses on a sense of Déjà vu and familiarity. It’s a powerful sensation, whether it’s focused on a person, place, or a thing.

Come, sit down and allow me to give you a mini-escape and kindle your imagination.
With a deep breath, Aiden leaned against a gnarled tree as he pulled a canteen from his belt and opened it. After taking a swig from it, Aiden wiped his sleeve across his brow, collecting the beads of sweat clinging to his hair. As his lips curled into a lopsided grin, he offered the drink to the woman trailing him. “I have water here once you catch up, Romona.”
“You’re not much faster than me.” Romona closed the distance, snatched the canteen, and drank deeply from it, enjoying the crisp water while she glared at Aiden. “What’s so special with this patch of forest?”
Aiden retrieved the canteen and promptly closed it, before refastening it to his belt.
