Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most rewarding. I know it’s a cliché, but that just means it holds a fundamental truth. It’s also the reason I’ve always enjoyed sitting quietly and watching nature. Every season brings its own beauty, but there’s something especially meaningful about observing the landscape in transition, when one season begins to give way to another. Whether it’s fall to winter, winter to spring, or any shift in between, these in-between moments reveal subtle patterns and unexpected details. On this particular trip, I was lucky enough to catch the lingering traces of summer as autumn began to lay its claim on the landscape. From the vantage point of a moving vehicle, the world unfolds in soft layers, offering brief but beautiful glimpses into the rhythm of change.
The images in this collection reflect that fleeting complexity. They invite a slower, more thoughtful kind of observation, one that lingers beyond first impressions and listens to the quiet dialogue between what’s visible and what’s obscured. Here, structure blends with spontaneity, and the line between the natural and the artificial begins to blur. These scenes weren’t designed to impress with their scale. Instead, they reward patience and curiosity, encouraging viewers to settle in, study the details, and uncover the beauty just beneath the surface. As we crossed the bridge, I took a shot of a tree whose leaves had mostly fallen. Fortunately, the remaining leaves were a crisp red and orange, providing a vibrant splash of color to the scene. Just as with a previous image, the lattice of branches does a remarkable job of breaking up the distant shoreline. In so doing, it creates a geometric design that is as wonderful as it is organic. With each second, that far shore came into clearer focus, revealing a variety of colors thanks to the trees that had stubbornly refused to relinquish their leaves.
A few seconds later, I was able to snag a shot that carries hidden complexity. You’ll have to study the shot to see the interesting part of the shot. In the foreground, there’s a bunch of branches stretches out from the bottom left corner. Behind this web of limbs, you’ll find a dock extending outward from the shore. At first, the dock seems like a small detail, almost insignificant, but as you study the composition, this detail helps provide another example of the between nature and human construction. The branches appear almost protective, like a veil, letting only a sliver of the world beyond be seen, compelling the viewer to look closer.
