Eloquent Tales & Blues presents, Doll of Friendship

In Doll of Friendship, we witness a touching science fiction short story that blends an emotional story, with an interstellar setting, and the powerful bond between a child and a dying stranger. Amidst the stars, the Gemini traverses the vastness of space. In the moment of shared grief amongst the entire crew, we follow a child named Samantha as she wanders through the hospice ward of the ship.

During her exploration, we see her interacting with an elderly woman who is forgotten and alone. While the entire ship is focused on the ailing health of the ship’s matriarch, Samantha chooses to interact with this forgotten woman. Amidst sterile corridors and the looming presence of grief, the heartfelt exchange between these two reminds us all that kindness, no matter how small, can bridge the gap between generations.

For fans of character-driven sci-fi stories with a human core, this story captures the quiet, powerful moments often overlooked in grander epics.

Behind the Scenes:
Every time I grab an old story to publish here on the channel, I’m amazed at how close I was to an exceptional tale. Doll of Friendship was no different. While the core of the tale was another human tale, akin to Journey of Thanks, it needed some easing with the rougher aspects of the story. Things that I simply didn’t know back in 2018.

Walking down the corridors of the Gemini, Samantha held her mother’s hand with her right and clutched her most precious possession, the doll she had gotten for her birthday, to her chest with the other. As the two journeyed towards the ship’s hospice ward, Samantha spotted a lot of the people wearing a black armband with a series of red dots running along the center of it. The child shifted her gaze from the metallic corridors of her home to her mother’s left arm and found the identical band on it. “Mommy, why’s everyone wearing the same armband?”

Cassandra halted and then took a knee so she could look into her daughter’s eyes. “Our matriarch is sick, Samantha. All the adults are wearing these as a constant reminder of her suffering.”

“Why don’t I have one?”

With a sorrowful smile, Cassandra hugged her daughter. “You’re far too young to be worried about the meaning of these armbands. Now let’s keep going. We have to hurry, darling.”

Samantha nodded as her mother stood and continued their journey to the ship’s medical section to visit their matriarch, but the child didn’t understand what that meant. She was happy to be exploring her home with her mother. With as busy as her mother was, Samantha enjoyed the rare gift the morning brought her…
