Inspected Breakfast

Though Imryll forced Darren to reveal his creation, the actual test was always going to be Arlen. After all, she’s the teacher who assigned him the differentiation project. Innovation often begins with obligation, and while not every breakthrough involves a mystical sword or powerful ward, true creativity still rises to meet the need. In Darren’s case, it comes as a sweet-smelling, golden-brown solution that just hangs from a keychain. For this month’s second Wattpad entry, we’re diving into the lighter side of the magical Academy, specifically, a student’s attempt to blur the lines between potion-making and culinary creativity.

After his reluctant debut, Darren finally summons the courage to share his latest magical breakthrough with Arlen, a master of the healing arts. Though unmatched in healing, Arlen’s kitchen skills are rudimentary. What unfolds isn’t a confrontation but a warm, good-natured inspection. Between bites and banter, Arlen assesses both the flavor and function of Darren’s work with the same care she’d give any enchanted item. That it’s fluffy, buttery, and syrup-ready? Well, that’s nothing more than incidental!

Their conversation reveals not just magical mechanics, but the layered trust between teacher and student. It’s a quiet, character-driven piece about innovation, ambition, and the very human desire to grow, even if that means starting with breakfast. This story continues my exploration of small, character-rich moments within a magical setting. If you enjoy clever magic systems, tight dialogue, and a touch of whimsy, Inspected Breakfast is for you.

Grab a comfortable chair and hunker down as we explore this exchange between a teacher and her driven student. Will Arlen praise her student for his studies? Or will she rebuke him for reaching beyond his abilities?

Inspected Breakfast

Darren inclined his head as he pulled a pancake off his key chain. As it grew, it drooped over his fingers. He tossed it up and caught it on his palm before offering it to Arlen. “It took me an inordinate amount of trial and error, but I’ve incorporated a basic healing draught into the batter for these pancakes.”

“Your big experiment was… to turn a healing draught into breakfast.”

Darren shrugged, standing in front of her desk with a devious grin plastered across his face. “They’re easier to carry than a bundle of fragile vials. Besides, the pancakes are sweet and buttery enough that you won’t miss the toppings… and they’ll still heal most common ailments.”

She stared at the piece of food in Darren’s hand as her eyes widened. Arlen licked her lips as she retrieved the pancake, while turning her other hand up. “Let me see it.”

“Gladly,” Darren said with a wild grin. He dropped the deceptively mundane trinket onto her waiting palm before claiming a seat. “After everything I went through, I’ll say, making the key chain was my greatest triumph.”

She held the pancake to her nose and took a deep whiff. Arlen placed the key chain on her desk as she tore the pancake in half. “This smells like you just made it.”
