Art Roundup, week of August 24th

This entire mini-series was captured during the Sunset Cruise. You’ll notice that none of these images are filtered with golden hues, yet each one offered me a moment of peace. Together, they form a quiet study of balance, light, and subtle transformation. They don’t shout, they linger. Each image whispers in tones of amber, lavender, and turquoise, echoing the quiet power of stillness and the fleeting beauty of the moment. Whether you’re drawn to painterly textures, seasonal shifts, or meditative compositions, this collection invites you to slow down and witness the soft-spoken poetry of the world.

From the gentle arcs of shoreline to the glow-kissed treetops, these pieces capture the space between change and calm. Though the golden hour remained out of reach, the natural light gifted me something rarer: the in-between glow—the breath before the breeze. That’s the feeling I set out to preserve with every frame. If you see any images here that aren’t available on Natural Desygns or SM Desygns reach out to me through the Etsy store and I’ll add the image to the correct store. In the meantime, click any of the images to head over to DeviantArt to get a better look.

Whispering Cove

This composition evokes both calm and balanced feelings. The expansive canopy of trees dominates the upper portion of the image. The soft turquoise color of the water anchors the whole composition. After applying the watercolor textures, it provides a beautiful painterly softness to the foliage, which shows the initial blush of the looming seasonal change. The shoreline curves with gentle purpose, and it draws the viewer’s gaze from one side of the frame to the other with a slow, deliberate arc.

By the time this image was secured, the golden hour of sunset was still far off, yet the air was cooling, and the quality of light shifted. Between the depths and the color, the ocean waters had taken on an almost crystalline tone. As a result, everything around us seemed to breathe a little slower. This image reflects the in-between moments. The image is the epitome of a time that isn’t quite dusk, but no longer midday. This image highlights the perfection of stillness.

As I zoomed closer to the trees, I brought us closer to the heart of the fall palette. With a slight alteration of the watercolor textures, I highlighted the golden light as it poured through the foliage. The twisting light ignited the leaves with amber and saffron tones. The leaves themselves cast layered shadows that enrich the canopy, making it deep and velvety. The contrast helps draw out the illumination of the trees, making them pop even more vividly. The water, meanwhile, glows with a soft lavender tint, bringing warmth to the composition.

This was the warmest frame in both color and emotion. Even though we were robbed of seeing this during sunset, the light compensated us with something just as wonderful. With the slight alterations, the golden wash highlighted this coastline, amplifying the stillness. The combination of everything provided a reward, which was a fleeting moment of brilliance that whispered, ‘You were right to come here today.’ The cruise may not have delivered a dramatic sky, but this image proves it offered something just as special.

Glinting Stillness

Rumbling Canopy

Trees layered in golden bronze and olive green dominate the composition. The applied watercolor texture does wonders to soften the composition. Despite the softening, the trees stand tall and dominate the distant coast. This sight heightens the march of fall. These trees embraced their changing leaves, leading to the speckled nature of the composition. The shoreline cuts across the bottom like a ribbon of light earth tones, while the water reflects faint lavender-blue. There’s an intimacy here that’s preserved for everyone to embrace. We’re almost eavesdropping on one of nature’s quiet and intimate conversations.

Captured during the latter half of the cruise, this moment reveals how light was already altering, despite being too far removed from sunset to provide rich colors. That said, the light brushed the tops of trees in warmer hues. Though the sun still withheld its last act of the day, this frame hints at it, providing enough warmth to believe the glow might arrive. Offering a faint prelude, a rumble held quietly in the trees.

In this image, the warm glow vanished, leaving a cooler image that highlights the artificial shoreline. That manmade rim anchors the image, providing the viewer with a perfect opportunity to examine the composition. The pale green and chartreuse foliage that is refusing to yield to fall’s inevitable march along this portion of the shoreline. The trees are spaced just enough to reveal a manicured lawn and the pale facades of lakeside structures tucked between trunks. Meanwhile, the water is a rich blue-violet, calm, yet defined by the rolling texture.

This was one of the most vibrant moments captured on the cruise. It was taken as the ship rounded a curve, as I caught the breeze and a fresh angle of the shoreline. The trees shimmered in the late-afternoon light, and despite this event not happening during sunset, the energy of the small sailboat shifted. The world felt fresh. Something renewed everything. It didn’t mark a dramatic turn, though it highlighted the vividness of the remaining moments.

Rimmed Sunlight

Calm Return

As we continued to see the manicured and artificial coastline, I caught sight of a bird lingering on a floating log. It perfectly balances the feeling of natural beauty and subtle human design. The rocky shore rises just enough to separate water from land, as the spaced trees form a soft screen despite the green lawn, providing an openness to the buildings just beyond. Speaking of those structures, the white gazebo near the center of the composition is framed by the gentle foliage.

This image was taken just as the wind picked up, creating several small ripples along the water’s surface. Despite the promised sunset, the sights were still remarkable, and I was glad of the trip. With life as busy as it is, moments like this remain elusive. However, this scene radiates the peace I felt inside. It was like the tranquility found in parks or forests just after a storm. You get the sense that nothing in this composition is in a hurry, not the bird, not even time itself.
