After finishing Withering Path and Sprawling Secrets, I turned my attention to the final story for the month, a mystery. When I pulled the genre results, I weighed my collection of investigators. Each brings something different to the table, but I ultimately selected Marcus and his ethereal partner, Benjamin. That pairing gives me room to explore an investigation from angles that would otherwise stay out of reach.
Marcus never rushes his work. Every fact is confirmed with something that can support it. Every detail is weighed against the others until a clear picture begins to form. When a case looks too clean, he does not close the file. He spends more time with it. The stories that come together too easily are the ones that deserve more attention.
Across from him sits a man who seems to have done everything right. His timeline is complete. His records support his claims. His confidence never wavers. Each response lands where Marcus expects it, leaving no room for doubt and no obvious thread to follow.
Certainty has a rhythm. As Marcus continues his questions and the suspect’s answers fall into place, that rhythm begins to feel too controlled. It is the kind of perfection that does not invite scrutiny until it gives someone a reason to look closer.
Excerpt of Perfect Alignment
Marcus stood beside the kitchen table, hand on a stack of documents. He shuffled through the pile, scanning each page before returning it to the grouping with deliberate care. When he finished, he squared the edges with a firm thump and slipped into the chair. “Nothing seems out of order with these papers.”
The suspect sat in his seat, opposite Marcus, possessing a composure that seemed almost inappropriate for the situation. He leaned back and folded his hands on the table. With a shrug, the man met Marcus’s gaze without hesitation. “I walked you through the events twice already. You’ve been unable to spot any issues with my statements or documentation. I was home alone. You can check whatever you want.”
“I have been examining it all.”
“What are you hoping to confirm?” The suspect shook his head as he laid his foot upon a knee. “Aren’t you done with your investigation?”
“I’m working through something that’s bothering me.” Marcus grabbed a different stack and thumbed through the papers. When he stopped, he set it down between them and gave it a light tap. “The logs from your security system confirm you never left.”
Marcus tapped the table, his gaze fixed on the suspect, who appeared unconcerned.
The silence stretched like a thick, pressing fog as the suspect shook his head. “If we agree, then why are you bothering me?”
Marcus thumped the paper as he leaned back. “An entry was recorded at 6:12 p.m., and nothing after until we arrived.”
“Can I leave?”
Marcus grabbed another sheet and held it over the table. “According to your utility bills, your power consumption matched a quiet evening alone, and your phone GPS never drifted away from this location.”
“Are you done with your fishing expedition?” He gestured at the stack of papers and offered a small smirk. “We’ve detailed my actions several times. I’ve highlighted every moment of my night, and everything is accounted for.”
Marcus thumped a pair of fingers against the table, creating a march as he stared at the suspect. Benjamin passed through the wall and paused, taking in the room before drifting toward Marcus. He folded his arms as he settled beside him, his attention already moving to the suspect.
The shade reached out and laid his fingers on his partner’s shoulder as he said, “You’re focusing on the wrong details.”
Marcus freed himself from his partner’s ethereal grasp and cleared his throat while propping his head on his palm. His eyes bored into the suspect as he clicked his tongue. “So far, your story checks out.”
“That’s what I’ve been saying,” the suspect said, standing up.
Marcus rose and prevented the man from leaving before he eased the suspect back into his seat. “Grant me a moment. I found one more thing I need to verify. It shouldn’t take me too long…
