My world of Morven has been a delightful blank canvas for me to flex my imagination. Either by utilizing traditional fantasy creatures, my own creations, or some combination of the two. That said, one of the more intriguing creature types was my shifters. These are individuals who have dual forms, a human shape and a specific animal shape. While that ability is hardly unique, I’ve enjoyed the limitation that I’ve placed on these beings. Despite having some leeway in the minutia of the transformations, such as the shape of claws, the type/color of fur, or other cosmetic differences, a shifter is locked into a singular animal construct. Put simply, a bear shifter can either wear their human skin or their bear (of any type) skin.
Even though I’ve created several tribes of these shifters, all grouped based upon the animal types they can become, I’ve only detailed a few of the characters. And to be clear, except for Sylvia, from Harrison & Sylvia: Crossroads, I haven’t explored these characters all that much. I should also mention that while I’ve hinted at the relations between the tribes, I have not fully explored those relations in any meaningful way.
So when I sat down to craft this micro-thriller, I knew using these tribes would make for an excellent backdrop for exploration.
Come, sit down and allow me to give you a mini-escape and kindle your imagination.
A slender hand rested on a tree as the woman’s gaze whipped about. Between moments, every single hair lining her arms rose. She licked her lips as she eased away from the tree while scrutinizing her surroundings. Once away from the tree, she caught sight of her hunter. Instantly, she bolted as she shifted into a lean deer.
A roar thundered through the forest as the massive predator chased the swift animal. With each passing second, the black furred hunter neared its prey.
