Last Laugh

When March ended, I went to bed feeling proud of the month’s writing. After waking up very refreshed, I worked my day job. However, after I got off from the job that pays the bills, I pulled up my writing schedule and realized I was going to miss a couple of deadlines. Without missing a beat, I shuffled the deadlines around to ensure those posts would be released.

Luckily, after a quick peek into my notebook, I realized today’s micro-fiction deadline was an easy one to manage, since the broad strokes held told me to write a comedy in an episodic series of The Academy. And, having just finished Unlucky Voyager, I was in the perfect mindset to craft something lighthearted. Despite being in ready to produce a mini-comedy, I needed a tale to ground it in. After a few moments of thought, I remembered the previous installment in the series and the first draft flew through my mind.

The last time I created a tale in this series was back in January. In that tale, Calling, Aiden and Romona were dropped into a more dramatic story that ties into other works, which in turn gave me a perfect springboard to create a fun laugh. Fortunately, the story’s climax gave me a wonderful and bizarre kernel to set the stage for Romona’s sharp wit as a wonderful foil, to Aiden’s frustration.

Come, sit down and allow me to give you a mini-escape and kindle your imagination.

He turned toward her, presenting both hands. One set perfectly fine, the other possessed an angry scarlet shade. She reached for his hand, but he pulled it away. “Yeah, they got burned. Thanks for your concern.”

“And you’re still blaming the non-burning tree?”

A sigh filled the woods as Aiden pinched his nose. “I can’t explain how it happened, but you saw everything. It burned my fingertips.”
